Side impact dummies (SID) are specifically instrumented to help engineers design safety features that protect occupants in side impact crashes. These collisions differ from frontal impacts because there is less vehicle structure to protect occupants, with the most significant forces traveling through the pelvis, shoulder and head from one side to the other.
Pioneering safety systems
We produce a range of side impact dummies representing the 50th percentile (male) and 5th percentile (female), as well as child dummies. Our current models, the World SID series, includes the most accurate, kinematic properties and biofidelic human representation available. These dummies incorporate sensors covering the most vulnerable parts of the body—the head, neck and thorax—that are impacted by sudden acceleration and interior contact with a collapsed interior in a side impact.
